Urban Mobile Instruments for Environmental Monitoring
The URBMOBI system provides a novel product that integrates state-of-the-art sensors for environmental variables embedded in a system that allows mobile usage and easy data handling based on geo-location technology and data transmission by telecommunication networks. Sensors operate on buses, trams, taxis or similar vehicles in urban areas.
The data is geo-coded and post-processed depending on the type of variable, location and application. Further, the data is integrated into real-time models on climate and/or air quality relevant quantities providing climate services and environmental data for a wide range of applications. To foster market accessibility visualization tools and an accompanying graphical user interface were developed.
Based on a market analysis, which was part of the project, the definite specifications of URBMOBI-H were determined. URBMOBI-H (URBMOBI 2.0) specifies the sensor development and model integration focusing on air temperature, relative humidity and solar radiation only. This allows applications related to the spatial assessment of heat stress and related issues relevant to agencies, administrations and consultancies that are engaged with public health issues, early warning systems, urban and regional planning, real estate development and research on urban climate. Beyond the timeline and scope of this project lies the integration of other relevant variables regarding ambient air which makes URBMOBI 3.0 a fully capable instrument for spatially and temporally distributed data relevant for various climate services.
The combination of URBMOBI with existing atmospheric modeling schemes provides opportunities for the convergence between sensors and models, which results in innovative systems based on hybrid results. This is mainly due to deep and constant innovation in sensor miniaturization allowing a much higher measurement density and more and more powerful calculation tools.
