Subproject C4: Scale-Consistent Two-Way Coupling of Land-Surface and Atmospheric Models

The soil and vegetation are major components of the climate system. They are the main determinants of how and in what form solar energy is supplied to the atmosphere. They are the decisive factors for the formation of clouds and thunderstorms and therefore important for weather forecasting. They interact with the atmosphere to develop the ground-level climate and, thus, directly create the most important space for life on earth and, thus, for humans.

Climate models and weather forecast models must realistically simulate the energy sales in this complex system, including the ground-level climate, which they are currently only doing to a very limited extent. These deficits are partly responsible for the often poor quality of weather forecasts as well as regional climate modelling - if one tries to break down the results of global climate models into regions, for example.

The TR32 aimed to remedy these shortcomings by developing methods and strategies to measure energy and mass transport in the soil-vegetation-atmosphere range. So far, this is only known to a certain extent for the atmospheric part, but what happens in the soil is still largely unknown. The TR32 provides model components for climate research that can be integrated into climate models, in particular to break down global forecasts to regional scales.
