Gran Campo Nevado

Climate Variability and the Dynamic Response of the Gran Campo Nevado Ice Cap, southern Patagonia

The project Gran Campo Nevado of the geography department of the RWTH Aachen University focused on spatiotemporal climate differentiation and the intreactions with local glaciers in the Sout American Andes at 53° south. our work involved:

  • Running a monitoring system with measuring poles for ablation and automatic weather stations
  • Glacier inventory of the Gran Campo and glacier monitoring with the help of remote sensing an GIS
  • Calculating the ernergy and mass balance for individual study sites as well as extensively for a lerger area with the help of measured data and digital ground models
  • Classification of weather conditions and climate variability in south-west Patagonia from NCEP/ NCAR reanalyzed data and data from stations
  • Describing the effects of teleconnections such as El Niño Southern Oscillation and Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode on the climate in south-west Patagonia

Cooperation

The Gran Campo Nevado project was an interdisciplinary research approach focussing on the holocene and recent environment and climate conditions of the southern Andes at 53° south. The project was started by PD Dr. Rolf Kilian at the University of Trier. He coordinated the project group with partners in the following Universities: Freiburg, Heidelberg, Trier, Munich and Aachen.

further project partners were:

  • Gino Casassa - CECS (Centro de Estudios Cientificos), Glaciology and Climate Change Group - Valdivia, Chile
  • Ariel Santana - Universidad de Magallanes, Instituto de la Patagonia, Laboratio de Climatlogía - Punta Arenas, Chile
